Tomorrow, the SCP will continue its long tradition of celebrating Shirley Chisholm Day at Brooklyn College.
Since the creation of the SCP over 17 years ago, a number of distinguished scholars, activists, community members, and public officials have presented and participated on Chisholm Day. This year, we are celebrating 100 years since the birth of the Congresswoman. To commemorate this important occasion, there will be a special keynote guest, a commemorative performance, student reflections, and our inaugural SCP Awards Ceremony.
WHEN: Tomorrow, November 14th, 2024 from 11 AM to 12:15 PM
WHERE: Woody Tanger Auditorium, Brooklyn College Library
The SCP’s centennial celebration at Brooklyn College culminates a year of exciting developments in the advancement of Shirley Chisholm’s living legacy. Earlier this year marked the release of the SHIRLEY starring Regina King and directed by John Ridley. The film drew on the expertise of our director Dr. Zinga A. Fraser, who served as a historical consultant. 2024 also marked the opening of the first-ever major exhibit dedicated to the life and work of Chisholm at the Museum of the City of New York (co-curated by Dr. Fraser). And in October, Shirley Chisholm in Her Own Words, edited by Dr. Fraser, was published by the University of California Press. During our celebration tomorrow, the SCP hopes to continue to emphasize the continuing relevance of Chisholm’s lifelong social and political activism.
Now more than ever, it is important to keep the fighting spirit of Shirley Chisholm alive. We hope you will join us for our celebration tomorrow.
