The Chisholm Project proudly congratulates our director Dr. Zinga Fraser for the citation she recently received from the New York State Assembly.
The Assembly paid tribute to Dr. Fraser for her, “extensive work in education for the African American community worthy of celebration.”
The award cited Dr. Fraser’s many academic distinctions, her work on Capitol Hill with the late Congressman Major Owens and her work “educating, mobilizing and engaging black communities,” as the U.S. Policy Director for the Women’s Development Organization. In addition, the Assembly acknowledged her work as the Director of the Shirley Chisholm Project and as “one of the nation’s foremost experts on former Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm, African American Congressional Women, and African American Politics.”
Signed by Assemblymember Walter T. Mosely, the citation summed up Dr. Fraser’s impact in this way:
Dr. Fraser’s professional and philanthropic activities are an exemplary solution to the challenges facing the 21st century. Through [her] unwavering spirit of love for the African American community, Dr. Fraser has been and continues to be the voice of many, and the model of excellence…
The award was given to Dr. Fraser on March 30th, 2019 at First Baptist Church of Crown Heights, where she served as the guest speaker during their annual Student Recognition Luncheon.
Today, we would like to join the Assembly in thanking Dr. Fraser for her extensive work to advance the legacy of Shirley Chisholm and the well-being of the community.

Citation
WHEREAS a Great State is only as great as those persons or organizations who provide service to their community, whether through volunteerism, professional achievement, good citizenry or other endeavors; and
WHEREAS Dr. Zinga A. Fraser has demonstrated extensive work in education for the African American community worthy of celebration. Dr. Fraser holds a doctorate in African American Studies from Northwestern University, Master of Arts from the Institute for Research in African American Studies at Columbia University, and Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and Minor in African American Studies from Temple University. Dr. Fraser was the 2009-2010 Vivian Ware Fellow at the Delta Research and Educational Foundation.
WHEREAS Dr. Zinga A. Fraser’s career has yielded numerous awards, including the 2017-2018 American Association of University Women (AAUW) Fellowship, the American Political Science Association in 2014 and the Zora Neale Hurston Award in Social Sciences from Columbia University to name a few. In addition to working as a staffer for the late Congressman Major R. Owens, much of the work Dr. Fraser has accomplished has been for the advancement of black communities. While serving as the former U.S. Policy Director for the Women’s Development Organization and working on domestic policy issues for marginalized women, she has on educating, mobilizing, and engaging black communities, specifically black women and girls. Dr. Fraser has compiled numerous collections of literature and appeared on local, national, and international media outlets to raise awareness for the betterment of society; and
WHEREAS Dr. Zinga A. Fraser is the director of the Shirley Chisholm Project on Women’s Activism at Brooklyn College, and Assistant Professor in the Africana Studies and Women’s and Gender Studies at Brooklyn College. She has the distinction of being one of the nation’s foremost experts on former Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm, African American Congressional Women, and African American Politics.
