We are excited to announce the first event in our Shirley Chisholm Conversation Series: “The Battlefront is the Classroom!: A Conversation on Education, Culture Wars & Critical Race Theory.”

The Shirley Chisholm Conversation Series will explore important and under-examined dimensions of Congresswoman Chisholm’s life, activism and philosophy as they related to current political, social and cultural issues.

“The Battlefront in the Classroom” will be a panel discussion between the Director of the Chisholm Project and other experts in education. The discussion will pertain to Shirley Chisholm’s career as an educator, the goals of liberatory education, and the current debates surrounding critical race theory in the classroom. Dr. Fraser and her panel of experts will address the following questions:

  • How did Shirley Chisholm’s experience as an educator inform her political activism?
  • What can Shirley Chisholm’s career as teacher and congresswoman teach us about the battle for public education in Brooklyn and throughout the U.S.?
  • What is the role of the Black educator in U.S. society?

WHEN: Monday, March 27th at 11am

WHERE: Woody Tanger Auditorium in the Brooklyn College Library

Mark your calendars, and stay tuned for more details about this event and future events in our conversation series.
