This conference celebrates the fortieth anniversary of Shirley Chisholm's historic bid for the Democratic Party presidential nomination. Chisholm, daughter of the borough of Brooklyn, honored alumni of Brooklyn College, first African American woman elected to Congress was an outspoken feminist, supporter of public education, labor rights, abortion rights, peace activist, champion of the black freedom struggle and internationalist. This conference will bring together nationally acclaimed scholar/activists, as well as Brooklyn college students and community activists to look back at Chisholm's legacy, and more importantly, to carry it with them on their future struggles.
